6-Days Rongai Route

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, offering a quieter and drier ascent. The gradual slope makes it a great choice for climbers who prefer a steady pace.

Itinerary

Arrival :
Kilimanjaro International Airport

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your accommodation in Arusha. Relax and enjoy a welcome dinner as you prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 1 :
Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

Elevation: 6,398 ft to 9,300 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Habitat: Rainforest

The trek begins in the rural village of Nalemoru, winding through farmland and pine forests. Along the way, we may spot Colobus monkeys and, with luck, elephants or buffalo. We camp at Simba Camp, located at the edge of the rainforest.

Day 2 :
Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Elevation: 9,300 ft to 11,417 ft Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Heath

We continue with a steady ascent into the moorland zone, reaching Second Cave Camp. This shorter day allows for acclimatization, and we take an evening hike toward Third Cave for better altitude adjustment.

Day 3 :
Second Cave Camp to Third Cave Camp

Elevation: 11,417 ft to 12,700 ft Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Heath

A short, gradual trek leads us to Third Cave Camp. Along the way, we enjoy stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. This easy day helps with acclimatization as we prepare for the upcoming summit push.

Day 4 :
Third Cave Camp to Kibo Camp

Elevation: 14,160 ft to 15,430 ft Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 5-6 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert

Crossing the desolate "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, we make our way toward Kibo Camp. The stark, lunar-like landscape is a striking contrast to the lush rainforest below. Upon arrival, we rest early in preparation for the final ascent.

Day 5 :
Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Horombo Camp

Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft (Uhuru Peak), then down to 12,250 ft Distance: 6 km (4 miles) ascent, 16 km (10 miles) descent Hiking Time: 10-14 hours Habitat: Arctic and Heath

We begin our final push at midnight, slowly ascending through the cold and darkness. After passing Hans Meyer Cave (17,126 ft), we reach Gilman’s Point (18,681 ft) at sunrise, where breathtaking views welcome us. A final effort leads to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating at the summit, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short break, then continue to Horombo Camp for much-needed rest.

Day 6 :
Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft Distance: 20 km Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rainforest

The final descent takes us through the heath and rainforest zones, passing Mandara Hut (8,858 ft) for lunch. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, we collect summit certificates and meet our driver for the return to Moshi, where a hot shower and celebration await.
