7-Days Machame Route
Embark on an incredible 7-day adventure via the scenic Machame Route, known for its stunning landscapes and excellent acclimatization. This challenging yet rewarding trek takes you through diverse terrains, leading to the summit of Africa’s highest peak.
Itinerary
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your accommodation in Arusha. Relax and enjoy a welcome dinner as you prepare for the adventure ahead.
Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft

Habitat: Rain Forest
After a drive from Arusha, we begin our hike through lush rainforests along a winding trail up a ridge until we reach Machame Camp

Distance: 5 km/3 miles
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Heath
A steeper but shorter hike takes us through heathland with stunning views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru. As we gain altitude, we see unique high-altitude plants, including giant lobelias and senecios.
Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft down 13044ft
Distance: 10 km/6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We ascend to Lava Tower, a towering volcanic rock formation, before descending to Barranco Camp through the surreal Senecio Forest. The day helps with acclimatization, preparing us for the climb ahead.

Habitat: Alpine Desert
We tackle the Great Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb, before crossing rolling hills and valleys. A final steep ascent brings us to Karanga Camp, where we rest and acclimatize.

Habitat: Alpine Desert
We continue our ascent through rocky terrain to Barafu Camp, the final stop before the summit. After an early dinner, we rest in preparation for the midnight push to the top.

Distance: 18 km/10 miles
Hiking Time: 13-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic
Starting before dawn, we ascend through the cold, dark night towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After enjoying breathtaking sunrise views, we begin our long descent, stopping at Barafu for lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Distance: 10 km/6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
A final trek through the rainforest takes us to Mweka Gate, where we collect summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Arusha for a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. Depending on your flight time, you may have a chance for some last-minute shopping or relaxation before your departure.
